House of Glass by Hadley Freeman – I have raved about this wonderful piece of history which brings its characters and times alive to everyone I know. The story of the author’s grandmother and her grandmother’s siblings is riveting, a struggling Jewish family who began life in a Polish village close to Auschwitz. The story takes us through the early 1900s, the first world war, the move to Paris which they expected would be a safe haven, the second world war, and up to modern times. Hadley’s grandmother and her great-uncles, although close, each followed a very different trajectory to each other.
